What is an Au pair programme?

This programme was accepted by the European community in 1979 and other European countries were accepted along with the United Kingdom.

United Kingdom also  accepts au pairs from one of the following countries under the Tier 5 - Youth Mobility Scheme:

Australia, Canada, Newzeland, Japan, Monaco, Republic of Korea and Taiwan.

Who can be an Au pair?

Candidates who are aged between 18-30, have intermediate level of English, are not married, plan to stay up to 2 years and plan to leave United Kingdom once they have finished their au pair programme.

Demi pair programme:

In this programme, demi pairs work 15 hours per week and work 2 evenings babysitting. Demi pairs can expect to earn around £40 -45 per week.

Au pair programme:


Au-pairs are expected to work 25 hours a week. Normally Monday to Friday 5 hours a day and 2-3 evenings babysitting. They are expected to earn around £70-£755 per week.

Au pair plus programme:


In Au pair plus programme the working hours between 30-35 hours per week and 2-3 evenings for babysitting. They are expected to earn around £80-£85 per week.

In all 3 programs, au pairs have 2 full days off. This is normally Saturday and Sunday. If au pairs want to go to language school they are able to go to language school between 2-8 hours per week.

If the au pairs are from non-European countries they are expected to leave United Kingdom once they reach their 2 years visa. After this,  they cannot extend their stay.

Au-pairs get 1 week paid holiday after each 6 months. Having an international licence can be an advantage for au-pairs.

Duties of an Au pair:

Au pairs duties are: looking after children aged between 2-9 and involves light house work, for example dusting, hovering, washing, some light cooking for children, ironing and baby sitting on the evenings allocated.

Au pairs are treated as a member of the family by the Au pair families.
